Not Law Abiding?

Our friendly neighborhood JadeTroll has determined that gun owners aren't really law-abiding because some 44 individuals on the "Suspected Terrorist Watchlist", which not only the NRA but also the ACLU has issues with, applied for firearms during Feb and June of '04. and most of them were approved. Let's look at the numbers, shall we?

Total NICS federal checks in '04: 4,685,018
Number of people on the "Watchlist": 755,000

Accuracy of the "Watchlist": Piss poor

So, according to Jadetroll, it's perfectly alright to add people to highly inaccurate watchlists that are used to deny people their rights and privileges and lunacy to expect the Gov't to follow it's guiding documents and due process. He must also have no issues w/ Guantanamo or the CIA camps in Europe. Guilty until proven innocent. I wonder if he'ld feel the same way if his name was Akmed?

An interesting point in the article is this:

The legal debate over how gun records are used became particularly contentious months after the Sept. 11 attacks, when it was disclosed that the Justice Department and Attorney General John Ashcroft, a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, had blocked the FBI from using the gun-purchasing records to match against some 1,200 suspects who were detained as part of the investigation.

Why would they need firearm records of the suspects when not a single firearm was used? Oh, right. Being suspected of a crime is enough to invalidate due process.

Hillary: "It's what's between your legs that counts"..

..Not your ears as she plays the "Vote for me because I'm female" card:

WELLESLEY, Massachusetts (Reuters) - Democrat Hillary Clinton urged women voters on Thursday to rally behind her campaign against "the boys club of presidential politics" two days after male rivals attacked her repeatedly at a debate.

"The price increase was just too severe," said taxi driver Huang Youhui. "It will really affect us. But it is not worth protesting. It is a government decision."

Invisible tanks

An active camouflage system has been unveiled by the UK enabling armored units to be effectively invisible to Mark I "Eyeball" generation technology:

New technology that can make tanks invisible has been unveiled by the Ministry of Defence. In secret trials last week, the Army said it had made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted that an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012. The new technology uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank. The result is that anyone looking in the direction of the vehicle only sees what is beyond it and not the tank itself. A soldier, who was at the trials, said: "This technology is incredible. If I hadn't been present I wouldn't have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun."

How the technology works in a combat situation is very sensitive, but the MoD is believed to be testing a military jacket that works on the same principles. It is the type of innovation normally associated with James Bond, and the brains behind the latest technology is the MoD's very own "Q" - Professor Sir John Pendry, of Imperial College London. He said the only drawback was the reliability of the cameras and projectors. But he added: "The next stage is to make the tank invisible without them - which is intricate and complicated, but possible."

St. Clair County and Il States Attorney to seize gun range

In a closed session, they voted to close and seize the Caseyville Rifle and Pistol Club gun range located outside Mascoutah to allow for a building of a concrete plant against widespread opposition to their constituents.

Not surprisingly, St. Clair county has not voted to support the 2A resolutions.

Send them your love..

Euro Culture /= US Culture

I keep hearing from numerous Europeans that the US has more in common culturally w/ them than anywhere else so our crime problems must be due to guns. One thing they tend to ignore is that we are nowhere near as homogeneous as they are. Numerous countries (Germany, France, Switzerland, et al) are having political backlashes against those who refuse to assimilate whereas here, we have entire neighborhoods of cities that maintain their own indigenous societies and have for over a hundred years. Chinatowns being a prime example. This can also be related to the criminal sub-cultures. Most Western European criminals wouldn't think of killing someone over a prank or shooting up neighborhoods over a gang war, even in countries with relatively high firearm ownership levels. Russia, on the other hand, is demographically closer to the US with it's large variety of ethnic groups , has 1/10th the legal firearm ownership of the US according to the Geneva Graduate Institute of International Studies, and yet has five times the murder and suicide rate of the US. In the UK, even with firearms being effectively banned, school uniforms are being made "slash-proof" to protect against attacks.

So next time I hear that the US and Europe are nearly identical, I'm going to offer to drop them off in Cabrini Green or Englewood and see what they say if they come back.

DC Police to be deputized as Federal Agents

Giving them national arrest powers:

"As part of the program, several D.C. detectives will be deputized as ATF officers, allowing them to cross borders to investigate guns that end up in the District."

Remember though, it's all the gun's fault and not incompetence in the agencies:

"He acknowledged, however, that the agency's ability to curb gun trafficking in the city was limited. Further hindering ATF's progress was the fact that federal investigators typically didn't receive D.C. police reports on gun arrests for five to seven days, a critical delay."

So we're giving more authority to a department that can't even expedite basic paperwork. That makes sense.

And they admit they're going to start harassing people and using informants to do so:

Some days, the unit will employ "high-intensity traffic stops," pulling over cars for minor offenses to try to establish probable cause to search vehicles. Officers also will use informants to help them secure search warrants for suspected gun holders.

And on the reliability of "trace data":

So while city officers continued to recover more than 2,000 guns annually in recent years, investigators rarely tracked where the weapons were coming from and who the leading dealers were.

So, once again, more authority for incompetence. I bet Virginia's going to love DC cops coming into their territory.

Well, this says alot about Obama

Paid shills for the NRA?

According to "Wendigo" in the comments at this post, numerous pro-2A scholars are "paid schills" for the NRA. That's similar to Laura Washington's that the numerous gun blogs are somehow organized and funded by the NRA.

This is in comparison to Hemenway, VPC, HSPH, Gonzo, and the IACP, etc. whose "reports" are all funded by the Joyce Foundation, and the Brady Campaign who puts out their own.

So tell me folks, which ones are funded by the NRA? I'll wait.

Update: Wendigo replies:

You probably want evidence that the sky is blue and that humans need air and water to survive.

What exactly does the NRA do? Can you tell me? Hmmmm? Or are you just the NRA's paid "fake skeptic" who roams the Internets Tube City for posts to pretend to "question" with some measure of fake gravitas?

As to the paid shills, apparently you don't get out much. That's not my problem either.

Go educate yourself. Please.

Yeah, that's what I thought. When the facts don't support your claims, resort to more logical fallacies and insults.

Lawyer gets himself off..

Lawyer gets 30 days for sex offense

A Schaumburg attorney who pleaded guilty last month to indecent solicitation of a child was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail.

William Murphy Jr., 33, was also ordered to serve 30 months of probation. He had faced up to 5 years in prison.

Assistant States Atty. Ken Tatarelis said that Murphy had communicated with an undercover police officer posing as a teenager for two months last year -- discussions that included sexual topics on seven occasions -- before asking to meet her on June 7, 2006. When he arrived at a Winfield park, police arrested him.

The excuse? He was unemployed and bored.

Must be good to have clout. Yes, the title is intentional.

Stormfront supports Ron Paul

Neo-Nazi leader gives Ron Paul $500

"A LoneStarTimes.com investigation has conclusively established that a leading figure in the American neo-Nazi / White-Supremacist movement has provided financial support to Ron Paul’s 2008 Presidential campaign.

The individual in question is Don Black, the founder, owner and operator of Stormfront, a “white power” website that both professional journalists and watch-dog groups have identified as the premier English-language racist/hate-site on the Internet.

Previous LST posts have focused on banner “widgets” appearing on the front-page of Stormfront. It is important to emphasize that these are NOT “advertisements” placed on Stormfront BY the Paul campaign, but rather publicly-available graphics that Stormfront’s owner has chosen to place himself, with links directly to Paul’s donation page."

I agree w/ the LST's suggestions as to what to do w. the money. It should be donated to an organization that Black opposes. Paul needs to do something about this very quickly.

Activists break the law to protest legal guns

With no permit, activists rally at gun shop again

The Rev. Jackson couldn't be bothered this time (it's not garnering enough attention nowadays) but Micheal "Snuffy"Pfleger attended. Apparently it's an infringement for the Gov't to ask for a fee to "peaceably assemble" but it's perfectly fine w/ completely restricting other rights:

"We are not paying money to gather in a peaceful assembly," he said. "If they don't want us there, they should vote Riverdale gun-free."

Riverdale should fine Pfleger but of course they won't. It's so much easier to go to a safe neighborhood to march than to try and protest in the areas controlled by the gangs. You know, the ones that are committing the crimes w/ guns.
