In the hands of police officers, those demonic and evil "assault weapons" suddenly convert into "Patrol Rifles" that can no longer do harm to innocents and aren't designed to hose down masses of people w/ spray fire from the hip.

I'm less in agreement w/ the argument that the media recognizes that the weapons can be useful than that they've been called on their inflammatory descriptions and are trying to cover their own butts by modifying the language.
I'm a bit cynical that way.

Actually, I imagine you're right--my attempts at sarcasm don't always come through very well--I don't really think they've learned anything.
You have to give the media some degree of credit, though... they went from using a term that evokes something a "standard citizen" should never have, to another term that does the same thing all over again.
Of course, both terms are about equally inaccurate in their exclusiveness, but that has never stopped them before.
