Metra Train Derailments. Sabotage or Coincidence?

Two Metra trains derail

SOUTH SIDE | Feds still probing spike removal

"The FBI is investigating two Metra train derailments near a South Shore station Tuesday evening, just a week after dozens of spikes were removed from railroad ties at another South Side site.

"The FBI is trying to determine whether there is a connection between the incidents," said Judy Pardonnet, a Metra spokeswoman. "But there doesn't appear to be spike removal in [Tuesday's first] incident. . . . The second one I am not sure of yet."

So is this a case of intentional sabotage or the media just focusing more on Metra after an unusual incident? Either way, better safe than sorry.

If it is sabotage, I'm sure there will be kneejerk reactions to provide some sort of security along the tens of thousands of miles of track across the US not realizing how inane that really is. Extended logistic infrastructures have been a weak point for centuries. Even Sun Tzu mentions the difficulty of supplying at long distances if not exactly in "attack the baggage train" terms but it is implied in attacking their weakness. It was one of the primary strategies in defeating Germany in WWII. Who hasn't seen footage of fighter-bombers shooting up trains and trucks on TV?

Even if it does turn out to be coincidence, I'm sure someone in the media will "discover" how "vulnerable" our logistic base is and demand immediate action.
