Mixed On This One

Drew Peterson is a worthless POS who very likely was involved in the deaths of his two wives and I hope he rots in the lowest pits of whatever hell there happens to be.

On the other hand his conviction for those murders were based on 'Drew's Law', passed by the IL legislature,  allowing 3rd party hearsay and innuendo.

I really, really don't like that precedent no matter how limited they claim it is because we've all seen what happens to 'limited' laws. They tend to get more and more expanded as it becomes convenient.  Eventually no actual facts would be required and spectral evidence will once again be acceptable.

No 'Insurrectionist Timeline' Entry Here Either

Woman states on camera she would like to kill a presidential candidate.

Anti-gun fanatics at the CSGV will entirely ignore this incident and NOT add her to their 'Insurrectionist Timeline' even though she is fomenting unrest and opposes our republican form of Gov't.

Why?

Because she is Julia Rodriguez, delegate from NY at the DNC.

and since she's on 'their' side, it's only 'political rhetoric' and not encouraging violence against politicians.  That only happens when someone from what they claim is 'our' side does it.

West Africa Safer Than Chicago

Family moves from Gambia to Chicago for a 'better life'. Sons end up embracing Chicago 'culture' (aka gangs) and getting slaughtered.

But don't worry.  Rahmbo says “We’re containing it.”

I'm sure that makes everyone feels safer.

Still No Word On Jesse Jackson Jr's FOID

The family is playing their cards close as to whether JJJ will continue as a Rep or if they will attempt to handpick his successor (likely from the family of course).

I've heard some rumors that his FOID will be 'quietly' obtained by the ISP. That way the media can ignore the blatant hypocrisy of a long time anti-gun advocate who believes there should be special rules for those not of the unwashed masses.

My 15 Seconds of Geek Fame

The other day I mentioned that I had attended an interview w/ George RR Martin of Game of Thrones fame and had gotten to ask a question about the length of seasons in the world. I remarked I had gotten the sarcastic answer of the day but reading about it doesn't do it justice.

I found the podcast of the interview last night via the 'Westeros' fan club (the same group I won all the prizes from) and it is on Maureen Ryan's huffpo page. It has a much more detailed description of the interview.

I'm at about the 65 min. mark.

'Military Style Firepower'?

Anti's like soiling themselves over scary looking guns, so slap a pistol grip onto a shotgun and they think it turns into a fully-automatic anti-tank cannon or something:

Seriously, these people are even more ridiculous that the tactical fanboys. Read the comments, they are true examples of the 'people' that the CSGV thinks will protect you.

'Proper' Self Defense According to the CSGV

Doing the Can-Can out of step will prevent you from being hurt by criminals apparently:

It should also be noted that the individuals in the drawing in no way represents the lily-white employees of the CSGV.

WorldCon/Chicon '12 Day 4: The Pile of Hamsters Disperses

After dragging my carcass out of bed, I grabbed some breakfast at the ConSuite and talked w/ some friends until the Huckster's room opened up and I could do a last sweep for swag/souvenirs. Went back up to the room to pack up, kick my sister's kids awake and get ready to go.  It was a long drive home w/ only 4 hrs of sleep.

WorldCon is nowhere near as big as events such as DragonCon or GenCon. It also has a much older demographic.  In fact, many of the younger people who attend are the kids/grandkids of those who attended 20 years ago when I first went.  It's more of a professional sci-fi writers' convention (Hence the Hugo Awards) than a mass market one and it feels like the attendees are a VERY tight knit group and have been for decades. Many of the seminars are geared towards sci-fi/fantasy writers and the future of the different genre's.  The vendor's, display, and art rooms were also very sparsely attended compared to what there was in '91.

The convention itself is not organized or run by professional conventioneers, but instead by amateur enthusiasts and volunteers. They busted their butts to do an often great job but the lack of experience comes through. Example was the Anime room. It was listed in the handbook (on the wrong page) and had a list of what they where showing but NOWHERE did it say WHERE the room was.  There was also the situation of the head of logistics passing away just days before the convention started. Again though, they all did as best they could and many attendees where willing to lend a hand to help out when needed.

There are several other smaller sci-fi cons in Illinois, Capri-con, Windy-con, Chambanacon, etc that I hope I'll start being able to make.

WorldCon/ChiCon '12 Day 3: Con Crud Apocalypse

THERE HE IS!!!
Started the day feeling that tickle in the chest that preludes 'con crud'. That generic sick people tend to get after being surrounded by thousands of others from around the world for days at a time.  Decided to attend a couple of seminars on apocalypse literature. The first one had Jason Sizemore, Karen Burnham and John Hertz on the panel for "Is the Apocalypse such a bad thing?"
Somewhat dull but some interesting points were brought up. The apocalypse of the dinosaurs led to us. In literature, the classic story "Childhoods End" had the literal end of the world but the evolution of mankind to a higher state.  Also mentioned was 'Ender's Game' where humanity committed genocide against an alien species for our own survival. An interesting social aspect was a British commenter regarding the common use of firearms in end of the world stories as 'right wing'.

The next panel I attended was "Looking forward to the post apocalyptic world" w/ Elizabeth Bear, Sean Mead, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Kameron Hurley and Jeanne Cavalos.

This was a much more lively discussion at the beginning w/ discussions about just what types of apocalypse would be beneficial, how much infrastructure damage could be handled, the classic wide knowledge base of 'survivors' in the various stories, how most of us would be the 99% of victims etc. John Mead also referenced people going to their library for the Foxfire series of books. Then politics started being brought up. One individual on the panel, who at the beginning had criticized the bigotry and racism involved in colonialism then went on a tangent on how she unfortunately had canning in common w/ 'those people'.  'Those' being 'survivalists in the middle of Nebraska. Hmm. No bigotry or racism there. All the other traditional stances on 'global warming', 'peak oil', etc. were brought up over and over pretty much killing the fun feel of the seminar it had started with.  Afterwards, I spent about an hour talking w/ John Mead who was a ANG vet.

Found on the message board:

Spent awhile talking w/ some old friends and then got shanghaied into helping set up trays and food for the after Hugo awards supper.  After all the food I had eaten in the ConSuite, I certainly had no issue w/ helping out. After that I spent till about 3am talking w/ people I hadn't seen in 20 years plus some new friends.

Good day overall.
