What is OGRE?

At the show today, I had a DOOT reader come up and say hi (thanks guys, you're the greatest).  One of the questions he asked me was "What is that game you're always talking about?"

Here's part of the description from the website:
Ogre and its sequel, G.E.V., are tactical ground combat games set in the late 21st century. In 2085 A.D., armored warfare is faster and deadlier than ever. Hovercraft, tanks and infantry slug it out with tactical nukes. But the most feared weapon of all needs no human guidance. It's the giant cybernetic tank called the Ogre.
A good way to think of it is Axis and Allies on a tactical level combined w/ Bolos. It is a turn based system played on a hex map.  Combat results are determined by a 6 sided die compared to an attack/defense ratio matrix.

The introduction scenario places a company of infantry in powered armor, tanks, hovercraft and artillery on a nuclear blasted field.  Their job is to defend their command post.  The attacker has only one piece, an OGRE.  It's an even fight.

The expansion, GEV (Ground Effect Vehicle aka hovercraft) different types of terrain are introduced along w/ new units.  Later expansions added additional unit types, scenarios, maps (which can be interconnected) and options. Cruise missiles, laser towers, armored buildings, alternate types of infantry, etc are included to give the OGRE's more things to crush. ;)

The latest edition (6th), called the "Designers Edition", was started on Kickstarter early last year.  It broke several records for funding at the time reaching nearly $1M.  It is positively huge with detailed, chipboard flat and 3D pieces showing not only vehicles butalso terrain modifications for endless customizations.  Several individuals/companies sponsored customized sheets of pieces representing different factions (like my Nihon sheet, Vatican Guard, etc), alternative terrain or campaign sets.

The basic rules take only a few minutes to learn but endless variations from straight slugging matches to specific conditions/missions.  I've played the game since I was about 10 yrs old and still enjoy every match.

THAT is the game I'm always talking about.

Anti-Rambling

Another one of those 'Opinion' pieces by someone who received a talking points sheet from some anti-gun group and that's all the knowledge they have on the subject.  They don't even stay on one topic but just sort of wander around to whatever bit of NRA/'Assault Weapon'/gun owner hate sounds good at the time.

A few points I made in the comments:
I would love for the manufacturers to go before congress and start answering questions because then, just like what happened in Illinois during the Concealed Carry debates, the Congress-persons would be shown to be completely ignorant on what they're trying to ban.  Google  "shoulder thing that goes up" for a prime example of Congressional ignorance.  .

And it is ironic to note the link to the 'Violence Policy Center" (who's head, Josh Sugarmann's salary takes up a huge percentage of their budget) is the one that popularized the term 'Assault Weapon' to replace 'sporter'.  Why?  By their own admission: "The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons—anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun—can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."    What was that?  'Sleight of hand' to keep the public ignorant?
The supporting comments are just as ignorant:
It's funny how all of these supposedly tough guys with their guns and Second Amendment rights are some of the biggest cowards around. To run like frightened little girls whenever anyone mentions any sort of meaningful gun legislation is the sure sign of weak position bolstered by bluster.
Not really sure where this nitwit gets this from outside of his own personal beliefs.  THIS is why they have such a hard time getting anything passed.  They've got no support for their meme's.

Prepper Fail Update

Remember this piece of genetic fail?  Oh it gets better boils and ghouls.  From my buddy Kurt:
He's even dumber than was apparent then--the guy who appears on TV with guns, announcing his intention to commit armed robbery with them, turns out to be a felon, who can't legally own them.

Somebody stop this guy before he breeds.
Unfortunately the woman that was stupid enough to let him touch her was carrying his spawn when the show was filming.

Hollywood Egos

They're believing their own hype:
“I think the NRA is a disaster area.”
Mr. (Harvey)Weinstein then revealed his secret project. “I shouldn’t say this but I’ll tell it to you, Howard,” he said. “I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this head on. And they’re going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.”
Translation:  I'm going to piss off millions of gun owners w/ lies, stereotypes, and insults resulting in millions more spent of firearms just to spite me.

Does that sound about right?

Movie Review: White House Down

Holy Social Engineering Batman!!!!!

Take a completely un-plausible plot combined w/ mediocre action sequences and acting.  Throw in a hefty dollop of comments on the 'Military-Industrial Complex', US involvement in the Middle East, and all the antagonists being war-loving, racist, 'right-wing extremists' who hate the gov't (and Apple computers), and you've got an overall waste of two hours of your life.

That is all.

Overwhelmed by BS

Of their own making.

This claim by the Cook County Sheriff's office for example:
The Cook County Sheriff's office says it already has identified about 120 applications it plans to contest since the online application process was opened to most state residents Jan. 5. Chicago Police Department officials, locked in a battle to control high-profile gang violence, say they, too, are worried about keeping up with the flood of applications, while downstate sheriff's departments said they might not have the capacity to meet the new law's vetting requirement in the time allowed.
Well since Dart has openly stated he planned on contesting EVERY application until he was threatened w/ more lawsuits, I don't feel much sympathy.  They wanted a 'vetting' process, they got one.  Now they're whining they don't have enough time.  These are also the same people who pushed for a 40hr training mandate.

THIS is why such 'reasonable, common-sense' measures are fought as infringements (are you listening Metcalf?).  It's because they will use any reason to try to delay or restrict anything related to firearms.

Turkish Delight

A Co-Worker and friend went home to Turkey over the holidays.  He brought me back a present.

A Turkish military top in 'Arid' camo and a NATO national patch. They started using this pattern in '08 and it's still really hard to come by outside of their country.   A very nice Xmas gift indeed.

Staying Power

Anti's don't have it unless they're paid.

Two more anti-gun blogs, both decrying how they were winning and that gun owners are a bunch of stupid knuckle-dragging neanderthals have gone down the memory hole.  'Weapons4Sale' is gone completely.  'Armed with Reason' hasn't posted or responded to comments in a month.

The ONLY anti-gun sites that stay are those that have paid, professional advocates running them and then only till the money runs out.

Telling Words

A 'journalist', one of those who crapped themselves over Illinois passing CCW,  not only applies DOOT's Law but clearly shows the mentality of PuSH'ers:
What makes one person feel safe makes another feel in danger.
So now we live with guns in the purses and pockets of regular people. We'll see.
It's 'regular people' that make them afraid.  Even the title of the article gives more away as to the fear this person holds "Can common sense win out over fantasy of gunplay?"

To Mary Schmich, 'regular people' are just itching to start shooting up places and act as heroes.  This is a common view held by anti-gun fanatics and she makes it clear why that view is held.

They're afraid.

They're afraid of 'regular people'.

We'll certain 'regular people' that should be.  The ones who's opinions that are different from theirs.
