Daley, with his entourage of security surrounding him in Englewood, voiced these words of wisdom on the decision to arm the CPD w/ M-4's:
"When they (the police)come to a scene, someone has a semi fully-automatic weapon and you have a little pistol, uh, good luck."
"We're finding out that the weapons of criminals are getting bigger and bigger, AK47s, all types of different weapons, because they can carry assault weapons, it's not a violation of federal law, and that is a concern for all of us," he said.
The problem?
No-one knows who's going to pay for it, how the officers are going to be trained w/ them, or what the use/storage procedures will be:
First, the weapons must be purchased -- and it's not yet clear who is going to pay. Officers currently chose from a list of authorized handguns and pay out of their own pockets. Second, they must be trained in how to use them. That would be a logistical nightmare that would require all officers to return to the police academy.
Finally, the Police Department must determine whether the new weapons would remain in squad cars or be carried by officers.
I know! Raise taxes some more.
The other problem?
"Assault Weapons" are illegal in Cook County so they aren't "allowed"to carry "AK-47's", semi, fully, or "semi-fully". Not that Daley cares a whit about facts or the law when it comes to his personal agendas.
