Stupid Criminals

W/ copper at $3 a pound, apparently some people think it's worthwhile to try and steal it from live transformers.

In a shocking development, he didn't manage to do it. This electrifying experience is sure to be repeated by other bright bulbs of the criminal community.

Seattle PSH

Someone's been drinking to much Starbucks:

First, face up to where the Mexican cartels get their weapons of death. Virtually all, including pistols, grenades, high-powered ammunition and assault weapons such as the AK-47, are smuggled from U.S. territory, across the border into Mexico, where the gangster elements pay premium prices for them.

Yep, I can walk into any gun show or shop in the US, grab a couple AK-47's and a satchel full of grenades, and have them shipped FedEx to Mexico for some quick bucks.

Maybe, just maybe, the "pistols, grenades, high-powered ammunition and assault weapons" are coming from the "notoriously unaccountable, often corrupt, Mexican military and police forces".

But that would make sense, now wouldn't it?

One Anti is at least honest about his goals..

The Mayor or Toronto, Canada, David Miller, is trying to get the city the ability to ban guns and ammunition.

I don't think there's any defence for sports shooters any more," Miller said.

They are also trying to close down two gun clubs. The same type that Anti's like Rebecca Peters (and AHSA in agreement) say we should be forced to keep our firearms stored at.

Unpossibles

Oakland is drowning in guns

Consider the 127 people who were murdered in Oakland last year and one similarity leaps out: All but 20 were shot to death.

It's hardly any secret to any of us who live in the city that Oakland is drowning in guns.

Another Gun Blog notes that Castro is supporting Obama for the election. This is no surprise as Obama supporters also hang Che Guevara flags in his offices.

So is the the kind of "advanced" social policy we should expect from Obama?

Hill's worried about assassination

How kind of Hillary, she will not drop out because someone might get assassinated. You know I really do not like McCain but he's really looking better all the time.

But folks as I look at the political landscape, I can taste the Bile. This has to be the most disgusting lack of choices in all the elections I have ever seen.

Inaccurate Brady letter. Color me shocked.

Brian Malte, State legislation and politics director for the BC, claimed that :

While the Illinois FOID "permit to purchase" card does require a background check before issuance, it is the only background check required for the next 10 years until someone must renew his or her FOID card. This allows people to pass a criminal background check today but fall into a prohibited class tomorrow. In fact, the Illinois State Police have verified that more than 1,000 FOID card holders were able to purchase guns (although) they fell into a prohibited category after issuance of their FOID card.

The problem? From the FOID act:

Sec. 8.1. Circuit Clerk to notify Department of State Police.
(a) The Circuit Clerk shall, in the form and manner required by the Supreme Court, notify the Department of State Police of all final dispositions of cases for which the Department has received information reported to it under Section 2.1 of the Criminal Identification Act.
(b) Upon adjudication of any individual as a mental defective, as defined in Section 1.1, the court shall direct the circuit court clerk to immediately notify the Department of State Police, Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) department, and shall forward a copy of the court order to the Department.
(Source: P.A. 95‑581, eff. 6‑1‑08.)

So, by law, the ISP get regular updates on the legal disposition of FOID holders and it is their responsibility to revoke it. All Mr. Malte has shown is that the ISP is failing in their duty.

So we have to options. Either the Brady Campaign Director for State Legislation is ignorant of actual state legislation or he deliberately lied in order to mislead the public. I know where I'ld put my money.

Bloomie's intentional ignorance.

This would be why Judge Weinstein, who has a history of coaching anti-gun cases to proceed, won't let Mayor Bloomberg testify:

NSSF noted that perhaps the mayor’s insults stems from his self-professed ignorance of our nation’s firearms laws and regulations, business practices of firearms retailers and the duties of the ATF. “I don’t know what the law is and what procedures are,” responded the mayor to a deposition question on illegally purchased firearms, NSSF quoted him. “I have no knowledge of what appropriate safeguards are for a dealer to comply with the law or what standard practices are in the arms business,” they quoted him.

In the same deposition Mr. Bloomberg admitted he did not know that ATF conducted inspections of firearms retailers. “I didn’t even know they had inspections,” the bewildered mayor offered and Bloomberg also noted that he did not know what a Federal Firearms Transaction Record, commonly known as a Form 4473 was or a NICS background check.

The anecdote don't fit

In his latest screed, Paul Helmke attempts to associate Police Officers feloniously killed w/ the sunsetting of the AWB:

We can do something about the challenges faced by our local men and women in uniform. We can adopt policies to make it harder for dangerous people to get their hands on dangerous weapons - doing things like requiring background checks for all gun sales, and restricting easy access to military-style weaponry.

Unfortunately for him, the facts don't fit. We've all seen the fact that only about 2% of criminals get their firearms from gun shows so let's look at the AWB:

In 2007, there were 57 officers feloniously killed. While at first glance that would appear to be a trend increase from the 48 killed in '06, looking back a little farther shows that's not the case. In fact, 57 is the same number that were killed in '04 when the AWB was still active. The year after was '55. Since '97, only one year ('99) had a number below 50 with two years reaching 70. All during the AWB.

Of firearms used, the number of rifles (the FBI data doesn't distinguish 'assault weapons') didn't drop below double digits until 2005, the year after the AWB, w/ it remaining there through '07.

Of the 55 alleged assailants identified, 42 had previous criminal arrests, including 11 who had been arrested for assaulting an officer or resisting arrest.

15 of the 55 alleged offenders were under judicial supervision (e.g., probation, parole) at the time of the fatal incident.

And just to make it extra-special disingenuous, here's the details from the anecdote Paul uses:

Incident Details
Cause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Friday, March 23, 2007
Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type
Suspect Info: Charged with capital murder

Go wipe your shoes Paul, you're tracking up the place.

Update: One of Paul's lackeys, Doug Pennington, actually comments w/ the usual appeals to authority and popularity and promptly gets his rear handed to him.

Mexican murders up 32% so far this year..

Good thing they have such strict gun control or else the drug cartels might REALLY get out of control.

I'm sure it must be due to all the rocket launchers, grenades, machineguns and the hundreds of thousands of AR-15's that are being shipped in from the US.

This article via Joe Huffman reads more like an Onion piece or a Brady Bunch press release than anything resembling actual journalism. Case in point:

A majority of guns used in California crimes can be traced to purchase in Nevada, Arizona, Texas and Florida, according to a 2007 study by the Violence Prevention Research Program at the UC Davis.

The problem? This is an outright fabrication. Even though BATFE data is not to be used for statistics, let's compare. Out of 13,798 traces in 2007 where the state was identified, CA accounted for 9,981 of them. That would be 72.3%. How does less than 25% make a "majority". 10,865 of them even had a "time to crime" of over 3 years.

Never mind the fact that they only cite Wintemute, the Brady Bunch, and other anti-gun organizations and throw in the usual tripe about "assault weapons" w/o obviously having ever read the law. Those must be the "experts" that claim "more guns = more crime".

SailorCurt has more. So does Roberta.

FOP opposes Cronyism in Chicago

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue today decried the "double standard" that prompted Mayor Daley to endorse the idea of temporarily re-opening gun registration in Chicago after a request from Ald. Richard Mell (33rd).

"We have retired police officers who have a right to carry concealed weapons across the country, and they're being barred from registering their weapons in Chicago. We've taken one of these cases to Circuit Court. Dick Mell has taken his case to the City Council," the union president said.

All Daley is looking for is an additional vote on the board since he's losing support left and right. By supporting this measure which really only includes Mell, he'll use that as leverage to push more stupid laws through the council.

The FOP see this as well:

On Wednesday, Donahue questioned the mayor's motives for endorsing the change. If the goal is truly what Daley says it is, then the amnesty window should be permanently re-opened for existing gun owners, the union president said.

"If they're looking to find out how many guns are in the city, leave it open. Why set a window on it? Do it for everyone who has an existing gun," Donahue said.

Some folk just need killin'

No statement can be more true for the two scum who vandalized Stonehenge last week.

Now they're going to have to increase security and restrict access to it because of retards like this.

Wrong "Only Ones" folks.

To further show that ignorance abounds, residences of the ultra-safe, gun-free neighborhood of Englewood decided firefighters are also part of the problem and began harassing them as they tried to extradite critically injured people from a car crash.

Why did they do this? Well apparently one of the crash victims tried to punch a firefighter because he felt they weren't working fast enough and had to be restrained. Obviously the crowd felt that he should be allowed to freely assault the same people trying to help them.

Of course this is the same neighborhood where people scream about needing more police then shelter the gang-members and call out the Jackson squad whenever the police show up.

Private Laws for Public Servants

Everyone knows the Chicago Handgun ban right? How you had to register them back in '81 and if you forget one year, you're now a criminal? Well, Chicago Alderman Richard Mell, father in law of the Governor, has found a way around that. He wrote a law allowing himself to re-register his firearm after he forgot.

Mell forgot to re-register the weapons as required every year by the ordinance that he helped to pass as one of the City Council's most senior members.

So, what does an alderman do when he finds himself in violation of the law? He writes a new law. Mell has quietly introduced an ordinance that would reopen gun registration in Chicago and create a one-month amnesty for himself and other gun owners in the same predicament.

While this sounds like a good idea, it's tailored so tightly that it will really only apply to him and maybe a few other people.

But there's no elitism in gun control laws, right?

Thanks to Armed and Safe/Illinois Carry for the link.

UC Davis Microstamping Study

At the present time, therefore, because its forensic
potential has yet to be fully assessed, a mandate for the implementation of this
technology in all new semiautomatic handguns sold in the state of California is
counter-indicated.

'Nuff said.

2A Blogger Bash/NRA 2008: My Thoughts

How far we've come.

Amidst all the wailing and gnashing of teeth that we weren't able to carry during one, three hour session of the convention and the claims of journalists that we feel "under fire" I would like to relate these personal vignettes. During one forum, I was just a few feet away from one of the most prominent speakers in the US, Lt. Col. Oliver North. There were several security people nearby as well as a KY State Police Officer right behind me. While I was taking some of my shots, my carry piece was clearly visible.

And no one batted an eye.

I walked into the BassPro shop and there was a sign stating that fishing gear and firearms needed to be checked. I asked the person at the customer service desk if I needed to. He stated if I had a permit to just go ahead.

And no one batted an eye.

Think about that. Think about how much public perception has changed in the last 15 years. That we can go almost anywhere in the US while being able to protect ourselves and our families. Coming from a state where we are prevented from doing this anywhere and several jurisdictions actually openly violate federal law in regards to it, I find this amazing. I'm still trying to get my head completely around it. The convention was my CCW debut and now, coming home to the People's Soviet of Illinois, it has made me more driven to get CCW in this state. 15 years ago this wasn't even an option.

I don't assign 100% of the credit for these changes to the NRA. There are other great groups out there but be realistic. If our '800 pound gorilla' didn't exist at all or was the size of the majority of the other organizations, very little, if any, of this would be possible. I don't agree w/ the NRA on several issues, and I discussed this w/ quite a few of the reps., but they are getting things done. That's why I give them the majority (but not exclusively) my support.

This, in part, is why the NRA has come to the eminently wise decision IMO :) to work w/ pro-gun bloggers and vice-versa. We're the 'boots-on-the-ground' (or the fingers on the keyboards in this case) so we have a closer view of public perception than the leadership of a 3-4 million member organization can realistically get. It gets US more direct access to the upper-ups w/o having to go through 20 layers of functionaries to get to someone who can do anything about it. We all know things get filtered going up and down. With the horrible track record the NRA has w/ the traditional media, this gets them a venue into an ever increasing information distribution source, Even my small blog gets over 100 people visiting it every day, while we get access to more information than what is commonly available. We also have a faster reaction time than our said behemoth so we can find and respond to media/legislative hit pieces near instantly. Gotta love Al Gore's interweb.

What I like most about this, and still find surprising, is that they are working w/ us as independents. Unlike the GunGuys, I am not receiving wheel-barrows full of cash nor do I base or change my posts based on instructions from my masters. They know there's going to be criticism but feel that working w/ us will benefit more in the long run than not having us as a resource at all.

That said, I'm now going to start the obligatory thanks and kudoes.

First off is Bitter. You and I have butted heads a few times but I couldn't have organized this nearly as well as you did. My hat's off to you. You did a great job.

Mainstream Media

It was pointed out on HuffPo and THR that the season finale of Desperate Housewives had two of the main characters purchasing and practicing with firearms because they were being stalked by their ex's.

Desperate Housewives is rated #8 currently by Nielson w/ a viewership of nearly 15.5 million.

Brady's jumping on McCain "Loophole" support

This seems to be the issue they're going to push.

Dear Thirdpower,

Representative Mike Castle (R-DE) has introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 96) that will require Brady background checks at gun shows, and stop criminals and other dangerous people from exploiting these events to buy and sell guns.

We need you to contact your U.S. Representative today and urge him/her to cosponsor this important bill that would close the gun show loophole. We want the law to be: "no background check, no gun, no excuses!"

We need to make it harder for convicted felons, the dangerously mentally ill, and others like them to get guns. One simple solution is closing the gun show loophole.

Note they've dropped the references to Cho. Yep. Time to contact my Rep and ask him NOT to co-sponsor this legislation.

Here's the text. As of right now, it only has 9 co-sponsors, Castle's bit on it, and the NRA sheet.

Schoenke attacks NRA for hosting McCain.

because of his weak stand on firearm rights.

but the AHSA is supporting Barack "Urbanites can't be trusted" Obama.

Does anyone see a disconnect from reality here?

2A Blogger Bash/NRA 2008 Day 3:Finale

Sailorcurt headed home about 6:30am. I headed over to the convention center for a talk w/ Paul Helinksi, the founder of GunsAmerica. He gave a very interesting lecture on how and why he started the company and where he thinks the industry is heading in the future. Ahab and I got into a discussion on Dragunovs before we headed over to the NRA and the Media Forum was being held. Two prominents there were Sandy Froman and Oliver North.

They started out with a video on the CNN coverage of our favorite buddy Sheriff Jenne and his 'assault weapon' fallacy. I was surprised by how many people around me expressed surprise at it as I consider it a staple of our evidence. I presented a question as to how many in the audience had never heard of it and about a quarter of the people raised their hands.

Even several on the panel expressed their surprise at that. I think this shows that we need to work harder to get the information out there when even long-term members are unaware of things like this. Several other questions were posted before the Truther ambush of Col. North. After talking w/ some fellow gun nuts from Michigan, I headed back to the Media room where I spent the next hour or so waiting for Tam and just generally BS'ing w/ the other bloggers. They left for lunch and I was just getting ready to head out to the floor for one last sweep and get some food of my own when the NRA reps got the phone call about our buddies also hitting up Ted Nugent. I decided to stick around to hear what I could hear. I'm glad I did as I was able to get a side of the incident that most didn't see.
Out to the floor I went where I ordered my wife's b-day gift from the NRA store and got some lunch. As I sat down at a table, a lady noticed my "I love Mayor Bloomberg" button but not the Lauer Weaponry site below it.

She gave me a cool look and told me I was sitting at the wrong table. I laughed, explained what it was about, then spent the next half-hour or so chatting w/ her and her friends from Texas and Idaho. Note to self. Next year, make up cards for the site.

That concluded my NRA 2008 convention experience. Once I get things in order, I'll do a roundup of what I thought about the whole deal.

The Truthers are out there

Several of us were present when a Truther hit up Col. North at the NRA and the Media Forum. He brought up REX84 and Building 7 on 9/11. After continuing to harass North, he went to the back of the room where he started talking to another person. After the Forum, another individual cornered North and apparently talked about the same things.

Turns out there were actually four of these guys and they were from The Liberty Voice. Their website isn't working right now but I got a screen cap of the Google Cache

I was in the Press Office when they got the call about this same group ambushing Ted Nugent w/ the same questions that they asked Col. North. I got this confirmed later talking to some people who were present at the Nugent event. They (the reps) decided to not yank the nutballs credentials as long as they didn't push it to far. Apparently the Truthers got what they wanted from Nugent as they left right after that.

If they ever get their site back up, expect to see posts about the NRA being part of the conspiracy.

We use the expression. 2nd Amendment, defender of the first. This incident shows just how true that is. While the NRA is willing to let these nutballs express themselves even though what they were pushing was completely off topic, I seem to recall the another "pro-gun" organization restricting media access only to approved "authorized journalists". I didn't hear about any this year. Their 25,000 members must not be paying their dues.

2A Blogger Bash/NRA 2008 Day 2B: Seminar & Banquet

Sebastian presented at the "In Your Own Words" Seminar.

A little nervous (you need to look up more Sebastian :) ) but a good overview of getting out and spreading the message. Most of the follow-up questions were directed to Sebastian and the speaker from the SCCC as these were the newest topics for most of the attendees.

Following the seminar, Sailorcurt and I got into discussion w/ several of the NRA reps on what we felt the NRA was doing right and what we felt they needed to improve on both politically and in relation to their PR w/ the boots on the ground. With luck, these discussions we've been having will filter up. Either way, they were listening and we might see some more pro-gun blogs hitting the web.

After going back to the hotel to clean up and get pretty-fied, we headed over to the KICC for the banquet. After mulling around for an hour or so where I met several other IL activists, we found our tables and the show began:

They presented a video of the Katrina confiscations who some people claim didn't really happen. It included not only the videos we've all seen, but interviews w/ people who were assaulted and robbed while the police stood by and did nothing. Of people that were prevented from protecting themselves and their neighbors by the authorities who did little to stop the actual criminals.

This was followed by LA Governor Bobby Jindal. Not only is he an eloquent speaker but he's a strong pro-gun advocate as well. He has an A rating by not only the NRA but the GOA as well. I ask this. Why the hell isn't he running for president? I've heard rumblings that McCain might give him the nod for the VP slot. God I hope so.

As hard as he was to follow. Glenn Beck, the keynote speaker at the banquet, managed. I don't watch him much as he's much more conservative than me and I don't agree w/ many of his opinions, but I tip my hat to a fantastic speaker. Referring to Michael Moore as a "Meatball in Sneakers" and the current presidential candidates as the "Three Stooges" had me, as well as the entire hall, on our feet, cheering and applauding. As he asked. "Is this the best we can do"? No, it's not, but unfortunately, it's what we've got. I think I'm going to have to start watching him more often.

The food was good, the service was slow, the company was great.

The FN demonstration fell through due a miscommunication. Got to stand outside the Media Room for an hour, got some breakfast, then hit the show floor. They talk acres. They weren't kidding:

First thing I noticed was a Repop "Coffee Mill" Gatling Gun care of Dixie Gun Works, Inc.:

Next was the ISRA Booth.

Pictured are Ron Corzine, John Webb, and Al Tiscareno (if I've mispelled your names, send me a message, my handwriting is horrible).

A Ma Deuce from Sabre stopped me and SailorCurt in our tracks.

After that piece of terror, we decided to take a trip to New York, where there are no firearms. What I found were some really nice toy guns by Lauer Weaponry:

I tried to get them to Duracoat my Prius in Multicam but they thought that would be to big of a project. Hey guys, just think of all the free advertising.

Just to prove that there is no truth to firearm owners compensating, we visited the Imperial Miniature Armory:

We closed out the circuit of the floor by meeting and talking w/ Dave Hardy, Dave Young, and Cam Edwards:

This afternoon will be the Seminar and then the Banquet tonight.

2A Blogger Bash/NRA 2008 Day 1

Quite a day. Woke up at 3AM and left by 3:30am. Arrived at the Convention Center at (what I thought was) 8AM.

Went to the Press Office to get my credentials and Ms. Ashley Varner, after hearing my name and introducing herself, reminded me about the time zone change. Oops. After contacting SailorCurt, I scooted over to the Marriott for the GrassRoots Workshop. There I met up w/ SailorCurt, Sebastian SIH, SaysUncle, Robb Allen, and Joe Huffman. The workshop was informative and was a good way to start off the weekend. Even if I was late.

SailorCurt and I then hot-footed it back to the hotel and then the Convention Center again just in time for the LeaderShip Forum.

Speakers included NRA leaders John Sigler, Wayne Lapierre, and Chris Cox. Other notables included Karl Rove (probably the most dangerous man in America, thank goddess he's on our side), and Lt. Col Ollie North. He stated "A hero is one who puts himself at risk for the benefit of another". I note this because two following speakers, US Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell and Green Beret Sgt. Greg Stube (both of whom fall under Col. North's definition) both insisted that they were NOT heroes, just patriots.

There were also a bunch of politicians. A few notables w/ quotes include Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) w/ the self-depreciating joke "We support the right of every American to be shot in the face by Vice-President Cheney" and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) "Charlton Heston will be remembered as a hero to future generations. Michael Moore will not." Mitt Romney had his say but the most infamous speaker was of course Senator (and Presidential hopeful) John McCain.

He did dance around the "Gun Show Loophole" bit and the Incumbent Protection Act wasn't even mentioned, but it was noted that he voted in favor of firearm rights on 'Assault Weapons', Confiscation, the DC Handgun Ban, and several others. He'll get my support. Grudgingly. He's better than the other electable options and I don't feel that "teaching the party a lesson" is worth the damage that Obama or Hillary will do. If I'm proven wrong at a later date, I'll admit it humbly.

As an aside, I want to note that the NRA staff who worked with us were fabulous. Ms. Varner not only expedited out passes but made sure we were in the right places at the right times and got our upgraded Banquet tickets were in order. Other staff members, including Justin McDaniel, Daniel Feldbusch, and Danielle Sturgis (sorry to the folks that I didn't get names) got us up to the front for close-up shots of the speakers.

I also discovered that a certain myth is false. Secret Service Agents DO in fact, have a sense of humor. I had just taken a shot of the gaggle of "Authorized Journalists" on the podium:

when a very dour faced agent (who looked as if he could break any of us in two w/o a second thought) came up to me and told me we weren't allowed to photograph the media:

My reply: "Really? Damn, you guys are strict."
He laughed ( Apparently they actually can do that) and said "Nah, go ahead". I shook his hand and took his photo.

Then it was off to the 2nd biggest Bass Pro shop in the US for Happy Hour on Michael Bane where along w/ numerous other bloggers like Ahab, Squeeky, Kevin Baker and many others to numerous to list, we also had Todd Jarrett and the publisher of SOF magazine.

They have really good food there. Sailorcurt and I then went shopping. Found a perfect set of beginner rifles for FourthPower Alpha & Beta:

Now to convince the CIC.

Tomorrow's schedule. FN demonstration, much walking around the vendor area, the "In Your Own Words" Seminar, cleanup, then the Banquet.

Off to the races

Getting on the road to the 2ABloggerBash/NRA convention. Posting will depend on time, access, and whether I survive the crossfire in this giant Wild West Scenario the PuSH'ers says always occurs when people protect themselves.

Numbers updates.

Armed and Safe notes that the BATFE Reform Bill has gained another 11 co-sponsors (including my Rep. finally ) for a new total of 191.

IL Pro-2A resolutions have increased to 81 counties.

Things could be worse.

CA Supreme Court strikes down Gay Marriage Ban

Good. Gays should be allowed to be just as miserable as the rest of us. :)

Now here's an interesting juxtaposition. The 'progressive' Brady Campaign et al have stated that it is wrong of firearm rights supporters to go to the courts when anti-gun measures are approved by the public.

Does that mean that they oppose this ruling by the CA SC because the measure was approved by the public?

Connecticut has had an AWB since '94 and is tied for 3rd place on the Brady Scorecard.

Yep. Those laws work so well.

Paul is Jealous.

He has to try and convince himself that since the strongest firearm advocates ran crappy campaigns that "that the politics of gun control is now leaving them (the NRA)."

To do this he has to omit that fact that over 300 congress-critters signed the Amicus opposing the DC Ban, that Obama has gone from stating the DC ban is constitutional and calling for full semi-auto bans to stating he doesn't take stands on current cases (a lie) and that he never saw the surveys. All the while Clinton is professing herself a hunter and attacking Obama for his gun stance.
Paul thinks getting an answer to why the NRA isn't exactly thrilled w/ him yet is supporting him (grudgingly) now will destroy their credibility (as if he has room to talk).

The answer to that is simple. He recognized where the support is.

I asked many moons ago how many candidates where begging the BC/VPC for support? This was during the time when you could kick over a random garbage can and a candidate would crawl out. Now there are three.

How many have contacted the Brady Bunch asking for their endorsement?

Estonian farmers face flatulence tax on cattle

ALLINN, May 8 (RIA Novosti) - Estonian farmers have received tax notices for methane emissions from their cattle, the country's opposition party, the People's Union of Estonia, said on Thursday.

Ruminants produce large quantities of methane gas through belching and flatulence when they digest grass, which accounts for about 15-25% of overall gas emissions, according to different estimates.

A single cow produces on average 350 liters of methane and 1,500 liters of carbon dioxide per day.

"For Copa-Cogeca, an organization that unites farmers of the European Union, the information received from Estonian farmers came as a huge surprise, and they could not recall a similar precedent in any EU country," said the party's spokesman, Jaanus Marrandi.

No other EU country imposes a flatulence tax on farmers.

A year after joining the Kyoto protocol, authorities in New Zealand proposed introducing a flatulence tax saying that New Zealand cattle are responsible for 90% of the country's methane emissions and 43% of greenhouse gas emissions.

No CCW at McCain Forum

NOTICE: By mandate of the U. S. Secret Service, no firearms will be allowed in Hall A of the Kentucky Exposition Center, the location of the Celebration of American Values Leadership Forum, on Friday, May 16. Please be prepared to go through security screening to enter the venue. We look forward to seeing you at this outstanding event!

Understandable if not ideal. All we need would be an "In the Line of Fire" scenario to end the momentum that's been built up.

Of course on the other hand, the Secret Service should recognize that he would be even safer if they allowed it. Think of what a roomful of carrying NRA members would do to the person that attempted to give Obama or Billary an easy sweep into office by shooting the Senator. It would be like dropping Bin Laden into Central Park.

AHSA claims 25,000 members...

That's probably just how many people have clicked on their website.

Of course the PSH is traditional.

Going through my old posts, I noticed this one from Nov. '07 on Obama:

All the while trying to get the Fudd vote. I expect him to receive an AHSA endorsement soon.

Damn, did I call it or what?

Shooting themselves in the foot (again)..

Remember that nice little postcard the Brady's sent out to IL Rep. Sandy Cole's constituents along w/ their robocalls? Well, according to the ISRA and other IL firearm advocates, not only are calls supporting her vote on the bill outpacing the anti's calls (shock, I know) but apparently she is running unopposed in her district.

While I won't to claim she's going to run out and join the NRA, I know that if I got lots of support for an issue while the opposing side pursued disingenuous attacks, I would look more favorably on the polite supporters.

Good job Brady Bunch. Keep up the good work.

Shifting the blame.

Chicago blames the state for pothole problem

First Deputy Transportation Commissioner Tom Powers blamed a shortage of state funding, apparently tied to the Illinois General Assembly's failure to approve a capital plan.

What does this have to do w/ guns? Not much directly but it does show the mentality of the authorities in Chicago (although they're not alone in it). When something goes wrong, it's never their fault. Can't maintain your infrastructure? Blame state funding. Can't run the CTA efficiently? Beg for more money then raise prices anyway. Got crime problems? Blame the policies of the rest of the state.

Never mind that entire police units have been disbanded for abuse, half the administration is on trial for corruption, or the fact that Chicago is a 'sanctuary city', There is nothing that is Chicago's fault.

Boy, those laws are doing good..

As juvenile delinquents in the UK just change their methods to even more violent acts.

A gang of London teenage girls is suspected of destroying three houses and killing a man with a homemade liquid bomb during an argument over a boy.

According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail, witnesses say a purple, smelly liquid was poured into a mailbox of one of the homes, which set off a massive explosion.

The intended target of the attack, Charlotte Anderson, was injured in the blast and rushed to the hospital with severe burns. Her next-door neighbor, Emad Qureshi, 26, who was at home with his parents, was killed when he was crushed by falling debris, it was reported.

Earlier, Anderson had phoned the police with a complaint that a gang of girls was harassing her over a boy outside her home.

Investigators inititally thought the explosion was caused by a gas leak, but now suspect the purple liquid — believed to have been made from a recipe found on the Internet — could have vaporized and caused the explosion, it was reported.

British police have launched a murder investigation and is searching for the girl gang, according to the Mail.

This is obviously a result of the US exporting its bomb culture.

They'll probably just be issued ASBO's. I mean, it's not like they used a gun.

BATFE claims executive priviledge.

After agreeing to allow agents to be deposed in the Adventure Outdoors case, they've changed their minds and decided that they won't allow it.

Why is this not surprising?

The Best Mothers Day Gift of All.

While Paul Helmke is rehashing eight year old events that went nowhere and Marsha McCartney, of the Brady Bunch spin-off sitcom set in Texas, gets down on her knees to um.. er.. beg (yeah that's the ticket) for more gun control, a conversation I had this weekend with an acquaintance shows what people do when they REALLY care for others' welfare.

My acquaintance, who resides outside of the People's Soviet of Illinois, knowing that I am a firearm enthusiast, told me that he was working on purchasing his first handgun. Being that he doesn't have a history of the same enthusiasm about them as I have, I jokingly asked him if he was planning on getting his CCW license as well. To my surprise, he replied "Yes".

Why the change of heart?

Two words.

Jeanne Assam.

My acquaintance is an Elder in his faith. After the Colorado Springs shooting and the other tragic events at VT, NIU, etc, he and the other Elders decided to take a took at the security of their church. Already a "Gun Free Zone", they recognized that the ONLY situations where the shooters were stopped before the end of their rampage were the ones where the people actively took measures to defend themselves. Their conclusion was to quietly establish an armed security detail made up of fellow church members and to get them trained to respond in case of an emergency.

Why not just advise everyone to run away or "show no resistance" as the anti's state we should? Because as he put it "sometimes there's nowhere to run to".

He, the pastor, and several others are currently in the process of choosing and purchasing handguns, finding locations to practice (of which I have volunteered my range), getting their CCW's in their respective state, and establishing emergency procedures should the worst occur.

Paul and his ilk instead advocate disarming them in all situations, leaving them helpless, and relying exclusively on the authorities in the hopes that a sociopath doesn't manage to circumvent one of the countless laws that are already on the books or one of the constant "just one more" laws that the Brady's et al. say will stop crime in its tracks.

I am going to do everything I can to assist them in their endeavor.

Mothers (and Fathers) protecting their children against the evils of this world.

That is the best Mothers Day Gift of all.

Brack Obama wants to be president of these 57 United States

Ah, Oregon. The beautiful Northwest. Rain. Trees. Clouds. Rain. Friendly territory for Sen. Barack Obama, the leading contender for the Democratic Party's long-disputed presidential nomination.

So there he was in Beaverton today at the start of a two-day swing through Oregon, virtually ignoring his remaining Democratic opponent, what's-her-name from New York, as part of his new strategy to act like the actual nominee while she flails around way behind in numbers.

Naturally, this being the Northwest where everything is not ruined quite yet, his staff had Obama visit an eco-friendly company, Vernier Software & Technology, that makes products for science teachers. He could get education in there too, see?

In his prepared remarks Obama was ready to start blasting Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, to show the Illinois Democrat is moving on to the general election campaign.

But first the freshman senator had to go through all the....

...obligatory delighted to see you, delighted to be here part of stump speeches that also require that you actually know where you are.

Obama pulled that off O.K. But then he drifted away from the text a tad, as rookies are wont to do sometimes, forgetting how exhausting this primary process is and should be. And trusting in their instincts, their very tired instincts.

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

The Times' conscientious Robin Abcarian thought she heard something different there. She checked her tape recorder. It had captured what he had actually said -- 57 states now. A new Louisiana Purchase that's gone unannounced so far? Was he channeling his inner John Kerry-Heinz 57 personality?

(UPDATE: At a later stop Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he'd also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. He said, ""I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh." At that point, an aide cut him off and ushered journalists out. Before he could mis-speak again?)

Oh, and as far as Hawaii voters are concerned, they're probably delighted to learn that Obama's campaign staff doesn't think that tiny state can justify an appearance by his eminence, even though he did a lot of growing up there. Or maybe because he was there.

Let's see what they do with that in the Honolulu media, which the Republicans have probably already notifed.

Maybe it's Obama's age. He's getting up there in his forties, you know.

Silly "Assault Weapon" Definitions

It's well documented that NJ bans the Marlin 60 and the JCHiggins 29 as "High Capacity Assault Weapons". Apparently Il Senator Dan Kotowski, in his magazine ban amendment conveniently attached to a blank child exploitation bill, wants to join in the stupidity by banning this:

The Henry Varmint Express in .17HMR. Why does this fall under the ban? Because the ban only exempts tubular magazined firearms chambered in .22 or ammo no longer available.

And this is why trying to define an "assault weapon" will be a never ending chore as the people doing the defining don't know what they're talking about. Right Sen McCarthy?

Paul celebrates Mothers Day...

from eight years ago. The last time they did anything relevant.

On Mother's Day, May 14, 2000, approximately 750,000 individuals, led by mothers concerned about gun violence, gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC to demand sensible gun laws. Across the country, an additional 150,000 to 200,000 people marched in their own communities.

The problem? The MMM had listed itself as a non-political 501(c)(3)organization. Over the next year, numerous complaints were filed with the IRS and they were forced to relocate from their offices.

Mothers Day, 2001:

Barely 200 area women, men and children turned up in downtown Washington amid brilliant skies and crisp spring breezes for a Mothers Day rally to promote "sensible gun laws," an event organizers also planned in 33 other states." ABC News online, 5/13/01
A decrease of 99.974% BTW if we go by Paul's inflated numbers.

October 1, 2001: MMM liquidates its assets and combines w/ the Brady Campaign.

Since then the number of "Shall Issue" states has increased to 40, "Castle Doctrine" bills have passed in over a dozen states, and nearly every one of their frivolous lawsuits have been dismissed.

Almost makes you feel sorry for them.

If "almost" is defined as "never".

3 days, 15 more sponsors.

Armed and Safe notes in comments that the BATFE Reform Bill is now up to 180 co-sponsors plus the sponsor himself as of 5/8.

Let's keep that momentum going. Only 37 non-sponsors need to vote yea for it to pass but let's make sure we don't have to count on that.

I'm going to be calling my Rep again Monday. He still isn't on the list.

Anti Math

The US accounts for approximately 40% of civilian firearm ownership in the world. Since it's regularly claimed that guns cause crime, one would then expect the US to have 40% of the worlds firearm homicides or deaths.

IANSA states that there are about 1000 firearm deaths/day, 250 of which are of a military nature. The remainder are homicides (560), suicides (140), and unintentional (50).

So let's do some crunching.

US firearm homicides/day (34)/World firearm homicides/day (560)= 6.1%

A discrepancy of 33.9% if guns cause crime.

US firearm suicides/day (~46.5)/World firearm suicides (140) = 33.3%

A discrepancy of 6.7% if guns cause suicide.

US firearm unintentional and unknown deaths/day (2.77)/ World unintentional firearm deaths/day (50) = 5.5%

A discrepancy of 34.5%.

So the US is missing about 190 homicides, 10 suicides, and 17 unintentional deaths by firearm/ day according to the anti's own numbers. So while the US does have a higher number of suicides by firearm than many nations, it does not have higher suicides overall nor does it equal the percentage of ownership. The US also only accounts for about 1/20th of the firearm homicides and accidents when the anti logic says it should be 8x higher.

So since the private ownership of firearms isn't 'causing' firearm crime or deaths, isn't 'causing' crime of any sort, and industrialization isn't a common factor, perhaps there are other factors involved.

But that would involve groups like IANSA, Brady Campaign, and the VPC taking off their blinders.

IL Senators claiming poverty at $75K+/year

In the middle of Garrett talking to reporters, Senate President Emil Jones Jr., a Chicago Democrat who supports the raises, walked past and loudly quipped that he needed to get some food stamps.

So just a year after a 10% raise and a $750M budget deficit, they think they need more. Hendon, who chairs the committee the bill goes through, won't even let it come up for a vote but has the gall to blame everyone else:

"They want to use the Senate and pimp us, and they keep taking the money," Hendon said of the House.

At least one Senator gets it:

"Let me just say that some of the legislators have missed the point if they think that they need the raise because they're not making $150,000 a year," Garrett said. "We are here as public servants. We're not here to assume that we should be entitled to be receiving major increases every year when the rest of the state and other state employees are suffering."

Guns "Easily Available" in Gun-Free Chicago

Criminologists say there's no clear reason Chicago's murder rate is so much higher, but believe there may be more guns here.

Hmmm, maybe the murder rate has something to do w/ this:

Since the beginning of the year through March, 70 percent of the murder victims had prior arrests records and 97 percent of the offenders had prior arrest records.

So a 97% recidivism rate yet most Daleycrats think the answer is to blame everyone else for Chicago's crime problem. If the easy availability of guns is the problem, you would expect to see higher crime and murder rates in the rest of the state where legal ownership is common. Yet Chicago accounts for 60% of the murders and 35% of overall crime but only has less than 1/4 of the state population.

One interesting bit of mixed-PSH came out though:

And FBI Special Agent in Charge Bill Monroe says despite talk to the contrary, assault rifles aren't the criminals' weapon of choice.

Yet:

"Most of our murders that are occurring out there are not occurring with assault rifles. It's the smaller handguns that are causing a lot of these murders," Monroe said.

No, the handguns are 'causing' them, that would be the criminals.

Prepping for the Heller decision..

Atty interested in talking to private investigators in Chicago

Fear Mongering.

The Anti's say we exist on it and they are innocent. Their own mailings show that's disingenuous.

More at IllinoisCarry.

Why?

Dozens of illegal guns seized in raid

No details. No charges as of yet. Just vague implications.

Maybe they're needing more funds for office redecoration.

Update: They added that he didn't have a FOID card along w/ a charge of domestic battery.

Sugarmann responds to Chapman

And still can't tell the truth:

Steve Chapman's column ("City misfires on gun violence," Commentary, April 24) leaves the impression that the Violence Policy Center agrees with his opinion that bans on assault weapons can't work. In fact, the VPC strongly believes that an effective, enforceable federal assault weapons ban would prevent future tragedies such as that which befell Starkesia Reed, the 14-year-old Chicago girl who was killed by a spray of gunfire from a Romanian AK-47. The assault rifle used to kill Starkesia Reed was purchased in Indiana in a successful effort to evade Chicago's stronger laws, the clearest reason why we need a strong and effective national ban.

At least he shows he's consistent w/ VPC policies of misleading the public by providing false information on "Assault Weapons".

The next mass killing by guns...

Will occur at the '08 NRA convention in KY next weekend.

Why?

Because CCW holders make the streets run red w/ blood and create Wild West shootouts.

Silly, didn't you know that?

Some Sense Pt I

The IL house rejected 94-8-6 the automatic pay raise.

Next it goes to the Senate who also have to reject it in order for it NOT to take effect.

$750 million deficit and the Senate President, Emil Jones, opines:

"I need a pay raise."

I guess it's hard to cover all those bribes and payoffs when most of your Chicago buddies are on trial for corruption.

Good thing it's illegal..

Because otherwise more kids might do drugs.

Police: 11-year-old was dealing marijuana at his school

Reality struck..

From the NRA-ILA:

The House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee was scheduled to hear arguments for House Bill 68 and House Bill 78, both sponsored by State Representative Cedric Richmond (D-New Orleans). Earlier today, Representative Richmond decided to pull both bills out of the committee and it is anticipated that they won’t be heard this session.

HB 68 would ban pump-action firearms as well as semi-automatics, and millions more firearms than the Clinton "assault weapons" ban of 1994-2004.

But they're not after your hunting guns. Really.

Rodney King Redux?

More than a dozen police officers will be taken off the street as authorities investigate a video showing three suspects being kicked, punched and beaten after they were pulled out of a car during a traffic stop, the mayor's office said.

I hope not. I hope that one of these three was the last shooter and the officers let their emotions take over. I hope that more information comes out and justice is served one way or another.

Either way, it has the potential to be bad.

Nutter shows that he needs to hire better spokespersons:

"At a glance it does appear to be a bit beyond the pale," said Doug Oliver, a spokesman for Mayor Michael Nutter.

More anti logic.

According to Leifrakur on Huffpo, in order to overthrow a tyrannical despotic Gov't that has abandoned the founding principles of the Constitution, we need to wait for said gov't to call us up into militia service and arm us.

The collective rights mentality in a nutshell.

Forgetting to wipe their shoes again..

While Sebastian has noted that both sides do it, the walking in the blood of the victims by the anti's is getting out of hand.

Nutter, who has clashed with the National Rifle Association over his support for local gun-control legislation, called on the NRA to apologize to the slain officer's family. The NRA has opposed expanded controls on guns.

Yet, if you read the article:

The SKS that police say was used to kill Liczbinski was originally purchased in North Carolina in 1996, according to the District Attorney's Office.

So the SKS was purchased legally DURING the Clinton "Assault Weapon Ban". Did it suddenly morph into an "Assault Weapon"? Did it's characteristics change making it a "bullet hose"? Does it use a different cartridge now than then?

The anti's ignore the fact that these three scum were career criminals :

"All three of them are career criminals," Ramsey said. "These guys aren't going to be rehabilitated. They need to be locked up – period."

Bryan Miller, however, shows he cares less about the death of the slain officer( as much as he claims he shed tears over) than using it to push his agenda:

If nothing else, the assassination of Sgt. Liczbinski may hasten us towards that end.

The only criminals Bryan endorses locking up are those made criminals by vague anti-gun laws. The kind he likes.

Why the AHSA supports Obama

He didn't vote to confiscate firearms. Apparently an F+ is better than a C-. Of course Obama is fully in line with their policies of "Assault Weapon" and 50 cal bans along w/ frivolous lawsuits.

The Brady Bunch said it best. Their goals are complimentary.

BATFE Reform

Armed and Safe notes that the BATFE reform bill, HR 4900 has 165 co-sponsors and links to the list.

If your Reps not on the list, it's time for calls and e-mails.

Of course it was...

Paul crows about desperately needed new laws "for the children". Only ones exempt. And the study he uses to justify his ravings?

The National Firearms Study 2004 was supported by a grant from the Joyce Foundation to the Harvard Injury Control Research Center.

Of course both of Paul's proposals (mandated safe storage and 'authorized user' sensors) are either A. complete violations of the 4th amendment and/or B. so reliable that neither the police nor military want them.

But it's for the children (tm) so obviously we must pass these laws, no matter how inane or ineffective.

Preemption or No Preemption. That is the question..

The Brady's can't keep their agenda straight. Back in November, they supported a Cook County bill that preempts local gov'ts laws.

Now they're opposing a bill that would preempt local gov'ts laws:

Dear Illinois Brady Campaign Member,

As early as tomorrow, the Illinois House of Representatives could vote on a terrible bill that will strip local governments of the right to pass local gun laws. The bill, HB 5506, would eliminate the ability of local governments to enact common sense measures to better protect their communities. The vote will be close and we need your help!

So we see where the hypocrisy is. Support a bill if it's in an area supporting "gun control" but oppose it when 3/4's of the state supports firearm rights.

Here's a link to the bill.

So get another hobby..

Remember those words from Rebecca Peters in the NRA/IANSA debate in regards to UK sportsmen (selectively deleted from their partial transcript)? Remember how all the US anti-gun groups and politicians are always saying they're "not after hunting rifles" and "respect the rights of hunters/sportsmen"?

Well, Alphecca shows just how little truth there is to that as the IANSA supported UK groups are opposing allowing the highly dangerous UK Olympic Pistol team to practice in country:

Gill Marshall-Andrews of the Gun Control Network hit back: “We oppose any kind of change, even for training. Why should we put society at risk for the sake of a few sportspeople?”

Think that's not the ultimate goal here in the states? Take a look at some of the North American Members. Not only the Brady Bunch, but several Joyce Foundation funded groups as well.

Let the Fudds be fooled. I'm not.

Pot meet Kettle

Miller uses the deaths of individuals to stump for laws while attacking people who use the deaths of individuals to stump for laws.

25 Square Kilometers. 90,000 bodies

No, this isn't a dumping ground for one of the Nazi concentration camps, Soviet Gulags, or Cambodian Re-education camps. This is the number of UK and Commonwealth soldiers still listed as "Missing" in the Ypres Salient from WWI.

This goes along w/ the phenomenon known as the Iron Harvest where shells, cartridges, barbed-wire, tools, firearms, and all sorts of other materials from the "War to End all Wars" are unearthed each year in France and Belgium to this very day.

This quote sums up my feelings on it:

"I honestly believe politicians ought to be brought to places like these to see what happens when wars are fought. We need history. It helps shape the future."

Gun Free Chicago

You'ld think with all the "strong gun laws" that the Brady Campaign recommends in place, headlines like these would be rare:

Man fatally shot on S. Side porch

A 19-year-old woman was shot dead

Parents charged in 5-year-old's self-inflicted shooting

Woman killed, 2 men hurt in separate drive-by attacks

But they're 5 times more common in Chicago than in the rest of the state where legal ownership is more common. Obviously it's the fault of everyone else.
