Chinese Flattop

The PLAN have apparently got the Ex-Soviet era Varyag at least somewhat operational. The news people try and make us feel better though w/ a pat on the head:
Beijing is believed to be years away from being able to launch and recover aircraft from it as part of a carrier battle group.
From what we've seen of US 'intelligence' (and I use the word loosely) operations lately (ie top secret drones being captured, entire networks being compromised, etc) , I wouldn't be surprised if it's w/i the next year or so.

This is also the carrier that when it was sold was supposed to be used as a floating casino and the sales agreement specified that it could not be used for military uses.

British archeologists would poopoo any talk of ancient technology because they just knew that the modern Brit is the smartest human ever and those other people couldn't come close. The US .gov and military have fallen into that thinking. There are lots of smart people in Iran and China (we edjucated them) and to think otherwise is to endanger the US. As a former co-worker used to say "that's gonna come back and bite us in the ass".

Meh. Flattops aren't really that scary. If you can use a sat' to find them, you can use a sat' to target them.

What's scary is boomers. Or even worse, cruise missile boomers. Now THAT is something to be scared of.

It takes years to actually become operational as a blue water CA battle group. It's not trivial, nor is it easy.
