Several blogs are having discussions over what they have ready in case of a SHTF situation like Irene. Over the weekend, I had some tables of surplus gear at the local mall. Quite a few people picked up stuff and/or were looking for items for their 'Bug Out' bags. Socks, MRE's, equipment pouches, backpacks and canteens all proved popular. I also got into discussions about the advantages of staying where you are to 'bugging out'.
I have plans and setups for both. We can run a week easy w/o power here w/ a generator (and gas), food, water and sundry supplies. I also have several containers ready to go into my car w/ the wife's van holding kids and household pets. Multiple destinations and alternate routes are already pre-planned depending on the circumstances.
Here are some questions you need to ask yourself if you're wanting to be prepared.

Good list, good questions, and I'd add one thing- Go to the bathroom BEFORE you leave... Saw lots of folks "checking their tires" along the 395 corridor after the earthquake last week. FWIW, a 15 minute drive turned into 1 1/2 hours...
