'We must ask taxpayers for more,' Daley says
Chicagoans would get hit with a $108 million property tax increase as well as hikes in many other fees next year under the proposed $5.9 billion city budget Mayor Richard Daley unveiled today to the City Council.
Daley called for a new 10-cent tax on bottled water, along with an increase in several other current fees and taxes. They include doubling the city's 911 surcharge to $2.50 a month on land lines, increasing liquor and beer taxes, raising the lease-transaction tax on items such as cars, DVD rentals and office equipment. Parking fines also would go up.
Daley said his proposed 2008 budget avoids substantial layoffs or service cuts. But having exhausted other options, Daley said, "We must ask taxpayers for more."
And more and more and more. All so Daley and his cronies can continue to line their pockets and hire friends and family.
And who supports it?
But Ald. Manny Flores (1st) said he's open to the property tax hike because he's been trying to get a new library on Chicago Avenue in his ward.
Translation: "Who cares what harm it will do, I can say I did something and blame any problems on other people."

Recently found your blog and like it. Keep it up. As bad as Daley is, he ain't gonna live forever. All the idiots buying 2 million dollar condos are going to find what it is like owning residential property in Detroit.
