Report: Police To Disband Elite Officer Unit
CHICAGO -- Chicago police will split up an elite unit of officers that has been at the heart of a corruption case involving allegations of kidnappings, home invasions and robberies, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday. The Special Operations Section will be dismantled, perhaps as soon as Tueaday afternoon, reported the Sun-Times, citing an unnamed police source. The SOS polices drug and gun crimes throughout the city, but seven of its officers were arrested last year on corruption charges.A leader of the unit, Jerome Finnigan, was accused by federal investigators of trying to hire someone to kill a fellow officer whom Finnigan feared would testify against him.Chicago police will hold a news conference Tuesday to discuss "organizational changes" at the department. NBC5.com will steam live video of the event, starting at about 3:30 p.m. It is unclear whether officials will officially announce the SOS will be disbanded.
Hmmm. Corruption and murder for hire in Chicago. Isn't that kind of redundant? Yet Daley supported them:
"The mayor gave no hint of disbanding SOS, which focuses on gangs, drugs and guns. He said the Police Department needs such specialized units."
Oops.
