New York already has a ballistics database. It's not microstamping, but close, seeing as how it's equally ineffective.

Umm, you have to do more than *pass* microstamping. CA passed microstamping four years ago, but like "smart gun" technology, it doesn't exist yet.

Indeed who gives a shit what the stamp on the cases say. The gun is most likely stolen so cops run the numbers (if they can read them, even lightly used microstamp guns don't produce legible digits) and it leads right to an open police file on a home break-in and a list of stolen property including gun with Ser#xxxxxxxxxx

Which illustrates EXACTLY why every bullet, casing, shot-pellet and grain of powder must be individually serialized and sold only after the sort of "background check" now currently reserved for "class III" purchases!
