My New Bare-Bones Ruger 10/22

My sister decided I needed a new gun this year so I decided on a Ruger 10/22 carbine. It's bare bones. No sling, no scope, factory wood stock. And I love it.

Took it out and popped off a few rounds out of the extra 30rnd mag I picked up and it fired like a dream. To fill it out, I ordered a weaver style scope mount, a set of swivels and 1907 style leather sling. So what's the preferred type of (relatively inexpensive) scopes for a 10/22?

I put a simple rimfire bushnell 3-9x40 on mine. Works fine.

I kept the wood stock. Looks really nice and those aftermarket ones either look terrible or cost as much as the gun.

Why don't you make a wire stock for it? Aluminum wire would be light, though you could use brass or steel. Easy enough to bend it to whatever shape you want. Recoil no issue. Paint it a good color, or blue it, parkerize it, etc. Have a stock that's unique, that you designed and made yourself. A very fun project, and not too expensive.
Here's a link to some wire stock pics:

I have a Sightron S1 scope on 3 of my rimfire rifles, one of which is a 10-22.
It is clear, well constructed, with easy and repeatable adjustments. Price is about $130.00 and worth every penny.
3 ~ 9 X, 32mm with a matte finish.
Cheap WalMart scopes will soon disappoint you, get a decent scope from the start.

Mine has just a peep sight, no scope.

Depends on what you want to shoot with it, I suppose - I find close range tin cans don't need optics.

tech sights are great, no need for a scope

you gotta try them

It's awesome to have a bang-around 10/22. I bought one for my dad for that exact reason on his ranch. Whatever you do on the scope, do NOT get NCSTAR. I was given one and didn't know what else to do with it, so put it on the 10/22 thinking surely it could survive on that. It STILL shot the reticle out of the scope. Terrible products.

I got a good deal on a Muller APV thru a deal on rimfire central.

I have a Weaver 2.5-7x28 Rimfire on my 10-22, and I love it. Great field of view, decently crisp, and very light and compact. I have mine in some very high see thru mounts that I had floating around, so the cheek weld sucks, but still plenty minute of wabbit. Plus, Weaver made alongside Leupold here in the us...

Incidentally, I've seen some fantastic pieces of birch hiding under the lousy excuse for stain that Ruger uses. If you're interested in the work, I've stripped plain stock with wood stripper, sanded and restained, and found all sorts of curly grain and fiddleback. Makes it look like a thousand dollar gun, instead of less than a quarter of that...

I'm happy with the 4x Simmons Rimfire that sits on one of my 10/22s. Tech-Sights are great updates if you want to go iron.

+1 on what Wolfman said - there's usually some decent looking wood under that stain. I've redone a couple of them and they tend to look pretty spiffy.

Forgive me an error I must correct, but REDFIELD scopes are made by the good folks at Leupold, rather than Weaver. I still like my 2.5-7x28 though. If it ever wore a 'Made in (blank)' sticker I appear to have removed it.
