Not an original idea.

A bunch of people are pissed off at Jackie Chan for publicly making a statement that is generally accepted in mainland China:
"I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," Chan said Saturday. "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

A former co-worker of mine is from China and, during a friendly discussion on political differences between the US and China, said pretty much the same thing, stating that the Chinese society wasn't 'mature' enough for western style democracy.

Whether these are beliefs held because of in-depth personal analysis or cultural socialization I won't make a claim on. Nor will I make any claims as to the accuracy of Chan's beliefs.

What I will say is that this once again shows that different cultures 'think' differently than each other. They hold different mores and values that may be completely alien to someone from a different culture.

Trying to make one big happy world where it rains gumdrops, unicorns fart rainbows, and everybody goes around hugging eachother in a hippy induced daze is just a fools dream for people who think that humans are more than just one step above their baser instincts.

No problem, just lock him up until he figures it out.
