Detachment From Reality

Anti-gun true believers can't let facts or evidence get in the way of a good meme, in this case, the Bagdad Bob claim of '90%':
It would be a valuable cross-cultural field trip for LaPierre to take a look outside the hall, where representatives of the 90 percent were gathered. The moms at the gates gladly would have pointed out to him that 82 people die every day because guns fall into the hands of nonlaw-abiding citizens, curious children, the mentally ill and the suicidal. (Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Everytown for Gun Safety and Mayors Against Illegal Guns are backed by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP.)
Right, LaPierre is going to pay attention to a hundred or so people paid by Bloomberg to show up over a mile away and 'protest' when he's got over 70,000 people attending the annual meeting. Earlier in the article:
The NRA’s 4 million members don’t seem to feel a corresponding obligation to understand the 90 percent of Americans who say in polls they would like to see universal background checks for gun buyers.
Note that, 'In Polls'.  Not attending rallies.  Not members of gun ban organizations, but 'in polls'.  Whereas those 4 million + members of the NRA pay dues, write their congresscritters, and are, well, active.  I've asked it before and I'll ask it again, if '90%' of the public want these things, where are they?  Why does it take Bloomberg to have to fund these organizations?

Oh, right, because the 90% claim is FOS.  Just like Baghdad Bob, they ignore the tanks rumbling through the streets while claiming 'Victory'.

If 90% of the people support the anti-gun position; why is there a single politician voting against them?

Regardless of the money the NRA can supposedly throw at politicians; few will consistently vote against something 9 out of 10 people support.

Of course, it just shows how badly they are lying.

Yep, as I said to one anti who kept claiming the 90% number was reality, I simply said:

"Ok, well then it should be super easy for you to CRUSH us with numbers like that".

That ends the discussion pretty quick.

If the 90% existed the gun control bills wouldn't even be debated before they were passed.

They seem to have shortchanged the NRA by about a million members.

I'm willing to believe 90% of people "support background checks".

I also think most of them have absolutely no idea how the existing requirements work, and their support of "background checks" may well not overlap the existing NICS system.

(Hell, I'm a "repeal the NFA tomorrow" guy, and I support a NICS-style* check for commercial vendors, as not remotely infringing on the right to keep and bear arms.

* Not completly NICS as it is; while I have empathy for the idea behind the domestic-violence-order ban, that conflicts with due process to much to be supportable, but "keeping violent felons from buying until a judge says they're no longer a danger to others" is un-problematic.)

Oh, and they should he reminded that it's the NRA's FIVE MILLION members.

Don't laugh. Since I can't find reporting that Baghdad Bob was executed, it is highly likely that the Obama Administration is paying him millions to help them lose the war in Iraq.

Baghdad Bob turned out to be right after all.
