Some trailers for the new 'prequel' Star Trek movie have been released. Here's the Enterprise from TOS:

And here's the New Revised Standard Edition of the Vision of Roddenberry:

I have come to the conclusion that this is probably going to be a relatively decent science fiction movie. It is not, however, going to be good Trek, mainly because they made the same failure they did with Enterprise - you simply cannot make something look "older" than the Mark 1 Mod 0 1701 without losing people's interest.

The Star Wars prequels had the same dilemma with "older" tech; they tried to use a Victorian Steampunky aesthetic to pull it off, with mixed results.

Maybe it's because it's going to be a good sci-fi flick that it's going to be a poor trek movie.

In fact, I can honestly admit that this movie actually interests me, unlike the rest of the brand.

First Contact was kind of cool but that's because the Borg are really quite cool.

Hey, let's give it a few points...

- The saucer section looks pretty nice. Except it doesn't glow like the old one.

- The main dish area is decent

- The nacelle's are okay, might grow on me...

The Bad

- Elongated trailing neck, loses the definition of the secondary hull just a bit..

The Horrible...

- They kept the basis of the Enterprise-D (next generation) secondary hull. Which I never really liked.

- The warp nacille pilons are absolutely horrible. It'd have been better if the pilons were smoothly joined and blended to the secondary hull.

Overall I feel like someone hodge-podged ALL the enterprises together. I have the TOS saucer section, the movie version of the main deflector dish. The Next Generation secondary hull and new nacilles.

Guess this Enterprise qualifies as a wedding outfit. We've got somethings old, somethings new, somethings borrowed and a deflector dish blue.
