From an E-mail:
Apparently the Oregon State legislature is considering a plan to allow the Grande Ronde Indian tribe to open up an ammunition manufacturing plant on their reservation. I need to do some more checking but the scuttle is that they will be producing mainly NATO calibers to help ease the squeeze from other plants who are sending most of their wares to the middle east. Prediction is that prices will drop if this gets going as a portion of their production will be reserved for civillian buyers.
That and they'll be turning a tidy profit.
We might just be able to afford to go to the range again.

I should know more by tomorrow. I need to check with a friend whose following this.
I hope it pans out since with their considerable casino revenue, they could put together a damn decent operation.
Plus, living within driving distance of the reservation, I could score a case of .308 AND a squaw for a cheap bottle of rot-gut.
Now THAT is Hope/Change(tm) I've been looking for!
The Indians supplying ammo... There's a different picture...
I hope they go with a good .45ACP in 230JHP...
Oh good. I wasn't the only one finding the irony in that.
Ironic or not, I would be all manner of behind this. More income for the tribes, cheaper ammunition for us... win-win, if you ask me.
The update is that this is not being driven by the state but rather an individual who claims to have the high volume equipment needed to produce ammo on a large scale and he has approached the tribes to see if they want to invest/staff a production facility on their reservation.
Like most things, the original talk was more rumor than truth. This is not the tribes seeking state approval, but a business man tying to intice the tribes in investing casino dollars for a new venture, which the state would have some regulatory involvement in. I won't speculate too much but the tribes here have embraced capitalism in a big way an ammo is a big money maker.
Any further updates will be researched a bit more before I open my overly excited mouth.
